Working hours in 2025 – General Rules

The Labour Code sets out the framework for working time. The maximum working time per day cannot exceed 8 hours. On average, in a five-day working week, an employee hired on an employment contract should not work more than 40 hours. The settlement period over which the working time is averaged cannot be longer than 4 months.

Rules for Calculating Working Hours in 2025

The number of hours an employee must work in a given period is calculated as follows:

  • Multiply 40 hours by the number of weeks in that period.
  • Add 8 hours for each remaining working day (Monday to Friday) until the end of the period.

Each holiday falling in a given settlement period, and not on a Sunday, reduces the working time by 8 hours.

Working hours in 2025 – Working Time for Part-Time Employees

The working time for a part-time employee is shorter than for a full-time employee. The reduction is proportional to the number of hours resulting from full-time employment.

For example, if a full-time job means 160 working hours in a given month, then:

  • A half-time employee will work 80 hours (160 hours x 1/2).
  • A 3/4-time employee will work 120 hours (160 hours x 3/4).

Working hours in 2025 and Planned Changes

Currently, there are ongoing discussions about reducing working hours. There are several suggestions:

  1. Introduction of the 35-hour workweek:
    • reducing working hours from 40 to 35 hours per week;
    • this would mean working 7 hours a day, 5 days a week while maintaining the current salary,
    • the change aims to improve work-life balance and increase employee productivity.
  2. Introduction of a 4-day working week. Two variants are considered:
    • shortening the standard working day to 7 hours a day (with 5 days of work per week).
    • introduction of a 35-hour working week spread over 4 days (e.g. 9 hours a day for 4 days),
    • The changes are intended to improve work-life balance and increase job satisfaction.

The introduction of these changes would require an amendment to the Labour Code. Currently, there is no specific date for their introduction.
